Michael Farris Smith's The Fighter

The Fighter by Michael Farris Smith. No Exit Press, £7.99

The novel, set in Mississippi, Michael’s home state and location of much of his writing, deals with a broken down old cage fighter, Jack Boucher, who has run out of chances to repay his debts.

In a life which started bad and went on to get worse, Boucher has taken so many blows to the head he has to carry around a book of names to remind him who he likes and who doesn’t like him.

His last remaining wish is to keep the home which belongs to the woman who saved him as a child out of the clutches of the bank.

Unfortunately he’s also got a large obligation to clear with local head of gambling operations Big Momma Sweet, and she’s not of a mind to extend her deadlines any further.
